The UK government has introduced new guidance and a significant code of practice aimed at enhancing the quality of care for autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities, directly contributing to their safeguarding. This initiative, known as the Oliver McGowan code of practice on statutory learning disability and autism training, is designed to ensure that all health and social care staff acquire the essential skills and understanding required to provide appropriate and person-centred care. The core safeguarding mechanism lies in the establishment of a legal framework for delivering this mandatory training. This not only promotes consistency in care standards nationwide but also cultivates a deeper and more informed understanding of autistic people's unique needs across all service sectors. By mandating this comprehensive training, the government addresses a critical gap, ensuring that professionals are better equipped to recognise, respond to, and prevent potential harm or neglect. The Health and Care Act 2022 underpins this, making it a legal requirement for Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered providers to ensure their staff receive this vital education. This systemic approach is fundamental to safeguarding autistic individuals by fostering a more knowledgeable, empathetic, and legally accountable care environment, ultimately protecting their well-being and promoting dignified treatment.
