The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. Its fundamental purpose is to ensure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and to encourage care services to improve. For autistic individuals, this means the CQC inspects and rates services such as residential care homes, supported living facilities, and specialist hospitals that cater to autistic people. They assess services against five key questions: Are they safe? Are they effective? Are they caring? Are they responsive to people's needs? Are they well-led? The CQC publishes reports and ratings for all inspected services on their website, providing valuable information for autistic people and their families when choosing care providers. Their regulatory oversight and focus on fundamental standards of care are crucial in protecting the rights and promoting the well-being of autistic individuals within the care system, ensuring they receive dignified and appropriate support.
