The Autism Manifesto

Goals for a Compassionate Society

By Peter J Clark

Book Summary
The Autism Manifesto, written by autistic author and social care worker Peter J. Clark, provides a vital 'lived perspective' on autism and advocates for greater understanding, inclusion, and integration for autistic people in society. The manifesto challenges outdated views of autism as a deficit or something to be 'cured', instead presenting it as a natural human variation, and highlights the fact that different ways of thinking only serve to enrich society. Its core lies in the 10 Pillars of Inclusion, which offer direct, practical steps that everyone can take to improve the lives of autistic people in every walk of life, at home, at work, at school, in the community, in government, and in the authorities and legal systems.

The Autism Manifesto was written by an autistic author and care worker, Peter J. Clark, the founder and chairman of the Autism Info Center. His personal journey as an autistic person, combined with his years of experience helping, caring for, supporting, and educating other neurodiverse people, provides a unique and vital 'lived perspective' to the challenges and incredible strengths within the autistic community. The manifesto aims to build greater understanding and acceptance of autism and neurodiversity throughout society, world-wide.

This manifesto fundamentally challenges the traditional, outdated view of autism as a deficit, disorder, or something to be cured or treated. Instead, it reveals that autism is a neurotype, a lifelong and natural variation of the human brain.

The book dispels common misconceptions (such as the idea that autistic people lack empathy, that autism is caused by things like vaccines or bad parenting, or that all autistic people fit into narrow stereotypes like being savants or having severe intellectual disabilities). It also presses home the importance of neurodiversity, suggesting that just as biodiversity strengthens ecosystems, neurodiversity enriches human society. By embracing diverse ways of thinking and being, society gains greater innovation, better problem-solving abilities, enhanced resilience and adaptability, and increased empathy, ultimately unlocking the full range of human potential.

The core of the manifesto is its 10 Pillars of Inclusion which systematically tackle the barriers that autistic people face in every area of life. The Manifesto Principles outline the current challenges and propose clear, actionable plans for transformation in areas such as home and family life, care and support settings, social and welfare systems, healthcare, education, work and industry, law enforcement and the legal system, local authorities and government bodies, public spaces, and leisure, culture, and community life. For each principle, there are practical steps that everyone - including you - can take to make life for autistic people happier, more fulfilling and meaningful, and integrated within communities.

This important manifesto is the basis of the Autism Info Center's global campaign for equity, diversity and inclusion for autistic and other neurodiverse people, as well as being a practical handbook for citizens, businesses, charities and authorities.
