UK health organisation managers have issued an urgent warning that the costs of delivering autism and neurodevelopmental services have become completely unsustainable.
A comprehensive report published by the NHS Alliance reveals that surging demand since the pandemic has led to a tenfold spending increase in certain local areas within a single year.
The rapid influx of private providers entering the public market under legal choice rules has created severe financial pressure for regional healthcare boards.
The report revealed astonishing variations in assessment costs, with some local integrated boards paying between three hundred and three thousand pounds for identical diagnostic services.
Healthcare commissioners explained that unplanned budget overspends are now forcing leaders to consider closing referral lists or reducing other vital frontline provisions.
The organisation called on national policymakers to implement a mandatory national price tariff and establish enforceable service standards across all public and private contractors.
They warned that leaving the current system unregulated creates a terrible deal for both taxpayers and neurodivergent patients who desperately require consistent, high-quality, and ongoing clinical care.
