Disability rights advocates are expressing deep concern over a new legislative bill designed to protect health care workers, warning it could unintentionally harm people with profound autism.
The proposed laws aim to increase penalties for individuals who act aggressively towards medical staff.
However, families and experts argue that the legislation fails to account for the complex realities of severe neurodevelopmental conditions.
Autistic people who experience extreme sensory overload or confusion in medical settings can sometimes display distress behaviours, which may include unintentional physical reactions.
Advocates fear that these involuntary responses could be severely misinterpreted by staff who lack specific neurodiversity training, leading to unfair criminal charges or the denial of essential medical care.
Campaigners are urgently pressing lawmakers to amend the bill to exclude specific care settings, such as specialised group homes, where residents require highly tailored support.
They stress that true safety must include protecting the most vulnerable patients from being criminalised for their disabilities.
The ongoing negotiations highlight the critical need for comprehensive medical policies that balance the safety of dedicated healthcare workers with the fundamental rights and complex needs of the neurodivergent community.
