Report reveals unacceptable delays in child autism support
Government urged to address failing mental health services

A devastating new report has exposed the systemic failures autistic children face when attempting to access mental health support.
The latest annual review from the national commissioner for children shows that young people are enduring unacceptable waiting times of over a year just to receive an initial autism assessment.
The statistics reveal that even after receiving a formal diagnosis, autistic children are forced to wait twice as long as their neurotypical peers to secure necessary therapeutic interventions.
Alarmingly, only a small fraction of those waiting for an assessment ever go on to receive meaningful assistance, leaving the vast majority completely abandoned by the system.
Charity leaders have condemned the situation, warning that denying timely support leads to escalating psychological distress, frequent crises, and tragic outcomes for vulnerable youth.
They are demanding urgent governmental action to reform these broken clinical pathways and improve joint working between health and social care services.
Advocates insist that future national strategies must include fully funded mandates to guarantee that neurodivergent children receive the care they deserve.
The findings serve as a reminder that prolonged diagnostic delays directly violate the fundamental rights of autistic children to achieve emotional wellbeing and fully participate in everyday society.
