UK autistic charity volunteer receives Royal honour
Two decades of community support is properly recognised

A dedicated volunteer for a leading autism charity has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the recent royal honours list.
Emma Whitfield was recognised for her exceptional services to people with special educational needs and disabilities.
She has spent over two decades supporting autistic individuals and their families through a local support branch, including serving as its chairperson for several years.
Her extensive contributions involve editing a crucial community newsletter that provides essential information and resources to families navigating the complexities of neurodivergence.
Whitfield initially joined the volunteer network when she struggled to find adequate guidance after her own child was diagnosed as autistic.
She found solace and solidarity within the group, describing the local branch as her tribe.
Charity representatives praised her unwavering commitment, noting that she has played a fundamental role in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for countless families.
They highlighted that her prestigious award serves as a powerful testament to the vital impact that community led volunteering has on improving the lives of autistic people.
The recognition underscores the ongoing importance of grassroots advocacy in bridging the vast gaps left by traditional public health and educational community support services.
