Extensive waiting times for autism assessments cause distress
People endure unacceptably long delays for official diagnoses

The ongoing crisis surrounding autism assessment waiting times continues to cause severe psychological distress and practical difficulties for thousands of individuals and families awaiting a formal diagnosis.
Recent reports confirm that the backlog in the healthcare system has reached unprecedented levels, with some patients waiting several years simply to be seen by a specialist.
These unacceptable delays leave neurodivergent people in a state of limbo, completely unable to access the targeted support, educational accommodations, and mental health interventions they desperately require.
Charities are condemning the situation as a catastrophic failure of the public health system, pointing out that the lack of timely identification exacerbates existing challenges and often leads to secondary mental health crises.
The prolonged uncertainty takes a massive toll on the entire family unit, leading to burnout and significant financial strain as parents struggle to support their children without official backing.
Advocates are demanding immediate government action and emergency funding to radically increase diagnostic capacity and streamline the assessment process, insisting that timely access to a diagnosis is a fundamental human right, not a luxury that can be indefinitely postponed.
