A major new mental health strategy is being developed to transform care for children and adults across the country.
The government has launched a call for evidence to shape a cross government approach that shifts the focus towards early prevention and community support.
The strategy specifically acknowledges that autistic people and those with ADHD face a disproportionately higher risk of developing mental health conditions.
Policymakers are committing to reflecting the specific mental health needs of the neurodivergent community within this wider framework.
In addition, a dedicated autism strategy is currently under development, with ongoing consultations to potentially extend its scope to cover ADHD.
The overarching goal is to move away from a system that solely focuses on clinical diagnoses and crisis management, towards one that asks what support a person needs to live well.
This includes looking at the roles of schools, workplaces, and local authorities in promoting positive mental health environments.
By identifying social and economic factors that impact well being, the government hopes to reduce the treatment gap and ensure that people have the tools and safe environments they need to maintain good mental health long before a crisis occurs.
