A specialist programme designed to assist autistic students in navigating careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is facing an existential threat due to new federal executive orders.
The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation at Vanderbilt University has seen a major grant suspended as part of a broader crackdown on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives by the Trump administration.
Project leaders state that the funding was paused because it contained keywords such as neurodiversity, inclusion, and accessibility, which are now being targeted as "woke" ideology.
Professor Keivan Stassun, the centre's director, argues that the programme is actually a workforce development tool intended to fill critical talent gaps in AI and cybersecurity.
The suspension of funds has already led to staff layoffs, including neurodivergent people employed by the centre.
While the administration's policy aims to eliminate equity - related grants, advocates for the neurodivergent community warn that these actions will exclude a large, underutilised segment of the American talent pool from contributing to national technological advancement and economic growth.
