In the US, a coalition of prominent autism researchers and advocates has established the Independent Autism Coordinating Committee (I-ACC) in response to recent changes in federal advisory boards.
The formation of this group follows the appointment of 21 new members to the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee by HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.
Critics argue that the new federal appointees include individuals who have promoted debunked theories regarding vaccines and autism, as well as non-evidence-based treatments.
The independent committee aims to ensure that scientific rigor remains the foundation of autism research and policy.
It will mirror the federal committee's meeting schedule to provide immediate, science-based responses to any federal recommendations that lack empirical support.
Leaders of the I-ACC, including representatives from the Autism Science Foundation, say the group is necessary to provide a credible source of information for families and clinicians.
The committee plans to publish annual reports on scientific advances and develop a strategic research agenda that focuses on genuine breakthroughs in genetics, therapeutics, and support services for autistic people.
