Sir Julian Smith, MP for Skipton and Ripon, has challenged the government to make special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) training a legal requirement for all school staff.
During a ministerial statement on the "Every Child Achieving and Thriving" report, Sir Julian welcomed recent commitments but pressed for autism to be placed at the heart of planned education reforms.
Specifically, the MP highlighted the need for training to cover diverse profiles, such as Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), ensuring that teachers are fully equipped to support neurodivergent students effectively.
"Training must be consistent, comprehensive, and embedded across the system," Sir Julian stated, noting that much of the proposed training is not currently set on a statutory basis.
In response, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson confirmed that the government intends to update the SEND Code of Practice.
The new requirements will mandate that all education settings-including early years, schools, and colleges-provide training on SEND and inclusion.
This move aims to ensure that every member of the workforce possesses the knowledge required to foster an inclusive environment, supported by new government investment.
