China and UNESCO focus on autism awareness

Collaboration to drive drive greater inclusion

The Hong Kong Autism Institute (HKAI) has announced a landmark partnership with the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia and Special Olympics East Asia (SOEA) to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) 2026.

This strategic alliance aims to elevate the conversation surrounding autism and drive greater inclusion for autistic individuals throughout the region.

Current statistics underscore the significance of this focus.

In Hong Kong, autism now affects approximately 1 in 40 children and has surpassed cancer as the leading cause of juvenile critical illness insurance claims.

Meanwhile, Mainland China is home to more than 2 million children with the condition.

The 2026 observance will center on the theme "Autism and Humanity - Every Life Has Value," focusing on the inherent dignity of all people.

Planned activities include a plenary session with autistic speakers, the launch of a Hong Kong-produced docuseries, and corporate awareness initiatives.

Damien Green, founder of the HKAI, noted that the initiative seeks to move from mere awareness to active participation in schools, workplaces, and sports.

By fostering a multi-stakeholder platform, the partners hope to transform Hong Kong into a center of excellence for autism, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals are fully included in the community's shared future.
