Neurodiversity among top HR challenges in 2026

Mental and physical health issues also rising

HR professionals are facing a complex landscape of emerging health issues that demand a shift from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.

According to Dr.

Bernard Yew, Chief Medical Officer at PAM Group, employers must navigate five critical challenges: soaring neurodiversity cases, the side effects of weight loss medications, rising substance use, a focus on preventative care, and the impact of personal relationships on mental health.

A primary concern is the surge in neurodiversity recognition.

With long waits for official diagnoses, the focus is shifting toward "needs assessments" and simple workplace adjustments to support autistic or dyslexic staff.

Simultaneously, the rise of weight loss "jabs" presents a hidden risk; significant muscle loss associated with these drugs may increase musculoskeletal injuries.

Experts urge employers to promote strength training alongside these treatments.

The workplace is also grappling with increased substance use, including record-level recreational ketamine use and legal cannabis prescriptions.

To mitigate risks, robust testing and updated drug policies are essential.

Finally, tackling the root causes of mental health struggles-particularly the stigma surrounding personal relationship strain-is vital.
