Two people from Massachusetts have been charged with exploiting a vulnerable adult after allegedly tricking an autistic man into sending them nearly $20,000.

Francisco Javier Escribano and Michaela Dorothy Francis reportedly targeted the victim, whom they knew from childhood, while he was attending college in Utah.

Investigators state that the couple invented severe hardship scenarios to manipulate the victim.

For example, they claimed they needed money for urgent brain surgery, diabetic emergencies to prevent death, and treatment for a coma.

The court documents highlight that the victim's autism spectrum disorder materially alters his ability to protect himself from such deceit.

Despite obtaining approximately $19,000 through these false pretences, the pair has repaid only $500.

Prosecutors argue they had no capacity or true intention to repay the funds.

Consequently, they now face multiple charges in Utah, including second-degree felonies for financial exploitation and theft by deception.
